Urogynecology

Urogynecology is a medical specialty that combines elements of urology and gynecology. It involves the treatment of urinary concerns in women, including:

  • Urinary incontinence.
  • Urinary urgency.
  • Spastic bladder/overactive bladder (OAB).

Treatments for these disorders can range from medications to physical therapy to surgery. We also offer more aggressive treatments including percutaneous tibial nerve stimulation. PTNS uses small electrodes to stimulate the nerves responsible for urinary control. While this procedure requires multiple treatments, it is a low-risk procedure with few side effects.

Pelvic prolapse refers to weakening of the walls between the vagina and bladder, or between the vagina and rectum. This can affect the way the bladder functions, and can require physical therapy or surgery.

The physicians at Novant Health Winston-Salem Gynecology have extensive training in urogynecology and some have board certifications in the field. They regularly assess and treat the urinary control issues mentioned above as well as other urogynecologic concerns.
